Trump Cites Indian Voter ID System to Push SAVE America Act

Washington, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump has praised India’s election system while renewing his call for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, a proposed law that would mandate stricter voter identification and proof of citizenship in U.S. elections.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had asked his administration, “How can you have elections in the U.S. without a valid Photo ID?” Trump highlighted that 646 million voters participated in India’s last general election, with less than 1% voting by mail, and said every voter was required to present a valid photo identity document.

Using India as an example of electoral integrity, Trump argued that the United States should adopt similar safeguards and urged lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act “now.” The proposed legislation would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and stricter voter ID requirements in federal elections.
