Piyush Goyal Dismisses Reports of India Rejecting Quick U.S. Trade Deal

New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has categorically denied reports claiming that India rejected a proposal for a quick trade agreement with the United States.

Responding to the reports, Goyal said, “This news is completely false, baseless and misleading. I had fantastic meetings with USTR Jamieson Greer, when he visited Delhi in June. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to an agreement that is balanced, commercially meaningful, and delivers tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both countries.” He rejected suggestions that India had turned down an interim or fast-track trade arrangement with the U.S.

The clarification comes amid ongoing discussions between India and the United States to strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Both countries have been engaged in negotiations on a broader trade framework covering market access, tariffs, investment, and supply chain collaboration.

The minister's statement seeks to dispel speculation surrounding the status of the negotiations, emphasizing that reports suggesting a breakdown or rejection of talks are inaccurate.

India and the U.S. remain among each other's key trading partners, with both governments continuing efforts to expand bilateral commerce and resolve outstanding trade issues through dialogue.
