The Sydney Bondi Beach attack : terrorists are Pakistan origin father and son
Australian authorities have identified the two gunmen involved in the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach as Sajid Akram (50) and his son Naveed Akram (24) were nationals of Pakistan, describing the incident as a targeted antisemitic terror attack. The assault left 15 people dead and dozens injured, officials confirmed.
According to New South Wales Police, the attackers opened fire on a crowd gathered for the religious event, triggering panic and a rapid emergency response. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son Naveed was wounded during the operation and taken into custody. Counter-terrorism investigators said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Photos circulating online and now part of the police investigation allegedly show the son aiming a handgun from a raised structure, while the father is seen nearby carrying a bag, suggesting coordination between the two during the attack. Authorities cautioned that images and videos are being examined for evidentiary value and urged the public not to circulate graphic material.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an “act of hatred” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting religious freedom and combating violent extremism. Investigations into motive, radicalisation pathways, and possible online influences are ongoing.
