IUML Support : VD Satheesan Named Kerala CM Instead of KC Venugopal
Senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, following internal consultations within the Indian National Congress and its allies.
The leadership decision reportedly came after intense discussions within the Congress, where several party leaders and MLAs were said to be backing K. C. Venugopal for the top post. However, coalition considerations played a key role in the final outcome.
Congress does not reportedly hold a majority on its own in the Kerala Assembly and is dependent on support from the Indian Union Muslim League, which has 22 MLAs. Political sources indicate that the IUML favored Satheesan’s leadership over Venugopal’s, influencing the coalition’s final decision.
Congress General Secretary (Org) KC Venugopal says, "Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi discussed about the situation and the decision making process. They called me and asked me my opinion and we all discussed that... I am thanking the MLAs, party workers, party functionaries for the support they have given to me. Finally, the party took a decision and as a sincere Congressman we are all behind the party decision."
While Congress leaders have not officially confirmed external pressure in the selection process, reports suggest the party opted for consensus to maintain alliance unity and ensure government stability.
The development marks a major political transition in Kerala, where coalition arithmetic continues to play a decisive role in government formation. Supporters of Satheesan describe him as an experienced legislative leader, while observers say the decision reflects the importance of alliance management in state politics.
Further announcements regarding cabinet formation and portfolio allocation are expected soon.
